The Inpatient Neurorehabilitation Service at Hillingdon Hospital hosted an event for their service users with speakers from the UK’s leading Stroke charity, the Stroke Association.
Patients, family members and members of the multidisciplinary team attended, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
Patients and relatives said the event helped to put their current experience into perspective and shifted their thinking from short-term to long-term recovery and they began thinking in years instead of weeks or months. They also said it was useful to learn about the support group in Hillingdon for people with dementia.
One of the standout parts of the event was hearing a powerful and inspirational story about the speakers lived experience of having a stroke. They spoke openly about accepting their ‘new self’ and acknowledging that they will never fully return to their ‘old-self’ or to how life was before the stroke.
This event was a wonderful collaboration between CNWL Inpatient Clinical Neuropsychology Team, The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Stroke Association so a huge thank you everyone involved.
