A QI project doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be very simple. It is based on iterative change, continuous testing and measurement, and empowerment of frontline teams.
For example an Older People's Unit carried out a project replacing cups with mugs. This not only helped increase fluid intake but was reported to be more comfortable by the patients.
A QI project is defined as a project that uses a systematic approach and specific techniques to improve quality. The approach we are taking in CNWL is to adopt the Model for Improvement.
The Model for Improvement
QI projects use the ‘Model for Improvement’ to apply change ideas to improve process and outcomes.
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement
CNWL is on the start of a journey developing QI within the Trust, we have partnered with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) to help us with this piece of work. The IHI have a long and successful track record in supporting improvement projects both national and internationally.
How would I start a QI project?
Anyone can get involved in a QI project. To get you started you need an idea, the will (a small team to help you achieve your aim) and the execution (your plan to do it).
Online Training
To help you get started with your QI projects and to learn more about what QI is, we have online training available through IHI.
For more information on the IHI Open School and how to access the training (including the passcode) please sign into the resources section of the site.
Certificates are issued for each module. Completion of approximately eight hours online training provides a certificate of training in QI methodology.

Tools and Resources
You should use Life QI to develop and manage your QI project. On the system you can develop driver diagrams, record your PDSAs, track your data and measures and invite team members to collaborate on your project.
You can also see if there is already a similar project on the system that you can learn from.
