What is confidentiality?
Confidentiality means that what you and your child tell us is kept as private as possible. The only exception to us maintaining confidentiality is if we become concerned about your child’s safety or the safety of others. We will always try to discuss with you and your child who we need to talk to and what we’re going to say, in a supportive and open way.
Who will be told that my child is coming to CAMHS?
Usually, the person who has referred your child and your doctor (GP) will know that your child is coming to CAMHS. It’s up to you whether or not you tell other people that this is the case.
Unless it is an emergency, we won’t talk to other people about your child without discussing it with you and your child first. Some young people find it helpful to let their school or others know so that people around them are more aware that they are having a difficult time. We can do this with you or for you if you would like.
What will I know about my child’s treatment?
Because of the important role that you have in your child’s life, we will involve you wherever possible in their treatment, and encourage communication between you and your child. There are some things that your child might want us to keep private. We respect their wishes and what they tell us in individual meetings remains confidential, unless we become concerned about their safety or the safety of others.
If you have any other questions about privacy or confidentiality please talk to your child’s CAMHS worker.

Will you tell my parents what I say?
We realise that there are things you might want to talk about that you might not want your parents to know. We respect this, and what you tell us in individual meetings stays private unless we become very concerned about your safety or the safety of others. Before sharing anything with your parents we would always aim to talk with you about it first.
