Preston Triage Ward – Inpatient Mental Health Rehabilitation
Preston Triage Ward, established in December 2022, was developed to address the pressing need for shorter inpatient rehabilitation stays to improve patient recovery, as well as relieving the burden on acute services.
Over the last year, there has been a significant shift towards shorter lengths of stay. As of February 2023, 64 percent of patients had a rehabilitation duration of under one year, which is an increase from the previous year at 38 percent. The average length of stay has also reduced by 24 percent in the last year.
Head of Rehabilitation, Sara Pountney, said:
"The triage ward has been trialling an innovative clinical model, facilitating a smoother flow through the inpatient rehabilitation pathway. During the pilot phase, it has successfully alleviated pressure on our A&E departments, enabling the step-down of 42 patients."
Patient outcomes have markedly improved in this setting, fostering greater independence and community reintegration. Here’s what a patient had to say:
"The staff are very polite, and the environment is calming due to the staff always smiling."
