This is an update about possible Aspergillus spores (explained below) being released in the dust from the demolition works that are making way for the new Moorfields Hospital. I also want to explain the precautions we are taking for vulnerable people.
Any people visiting the site for appointments have already been told about the low level risk and our recommendation to wear a face mask when walking across the site, until you go inside the building .
Microbiologists are monitoring five parts of the site every week and so far Aspergillus levels have been low.
Aspergillosis
Aspergillosis is an infection that can be caused in some people by the spores.
There is more NHS information about Aspergillus here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/aspergillosis/
Aspergillosis is rare but can be a risk for some people. We have already told patients coming for appointments about it.
People most at risk are those with:
- a lung condition – such as asthma, cystic fibrosis or COPD
- a weakened immune system – for example, if you have had an organ transplant or are having chemotherapy
- had tuberculosis in the past
- severe flu or COVID-19 and need artificial ventilation.
Symptoms of Aspergillosis include:
- shortness of breath
- a cough – you may cough up blood or lumps of mucus
- wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)
- a high temperature of 38c or above
- weight loss.
If you have a concern about this please discuss it with your clinician.
What we’re doing to protect you during the demolition work at St Pancras?
We are implementing the highest level of protection in our buildings.
This includes dust control and regular testing for Aspergillus outside and within South Wing.
We repeat that Aspergillus sampling levels so far have been low.
Sealing of windows is underway (please don’t open them!) and additional ventilation units have been installed.
There is also Increased cleaning to reduce dust build-up.
We will keep you updated but please ask your clinician if you have any worries or questions.
Best wishes
Sarah.
